Boukhatmi et al. report the discovery of a novel type of muscles and propose an architectural role for these muscles in the internal anatomy of the embryo. Specification by the Transcription Factors Org-1/Tbx-1 and Tup/Islet evokes parallels with vertebrate cardiopharyngeal derivatives.
